Jack Russell Terrier

Breed Description

Don’t let the size fool you: the Jack Russell Terrier is a small dog with an enormous personality. This is a bold, brainy little hunter packed into a compact, muscular body, and it was built for a job, not for lounging on a cushion.
Coat-wise, the breed comes in three textures. The Jack Russell Terrier has a double coat—predominantly white with black, tan, or black-and-tan markings—that is harsh and weatherproof and may be either rough and wiry, broken (intermediate), or smooth. Underneath that plush-toy look is a surprisingly athletic body. The JRT can leap five times its own height, meaning a 12-inch-tall Jack can easily jump five feet in the air.
Everyday life with a Jack Russell means constant motion, sharp opinions, and a dog that is always scanning for the next adventure. They are intelligent, independent, and full of energy, with a strong desire to explore and are always ready for an adventure.

Breed History

The story starts in 19th-century England with a clergyman who really loved to hunt. The Parson John Russell developed the breed that bears his name, a foxhunting enthusiast who wanted a good terrier to run with the hound pack and to dispatch the fox at the end of the hunt. A milkman gave him a dog named Trump, which suited his purpose and became the dog the breed was modeled after.
These terriers weren’t bred for looks, they were bred for grit and function. The type aimed for were not as big as the show Fox Terrier and were usually less than 7 kg (15 lb). Over the decades the working strain split into different types depending on leg length and body shape, which is why today you’ll hear the names Jack Russell, Parson Russell, and Russell Terrier used for closely related but officially distinct breeds.
In the United States, the breed’s fan base organized to protect its working roots rather than push for show-ring conformity. The Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA) was formed in 1976 by Ailsa Crawford, one of the first Jack Russell terrier breeders in the United States. The Club has always been emphatically opposed to recognition of the Jack Russell Terrier by any kennel club or all-breed registry, believing that recognition would be detrimental to the preservation of the Jack Russell as the sound, intelligent strain of working terrier it has been for more than 100 years. Meanwhile, the AKC eventually recognized related versions under the names Parson Russell Terrier and Russell Terrier.

Behavioral Characteristics

Confidence is the name of the game with this breed. Jack Russell Terriers are known for their bold and confident temperament, and they are loyal and devoted to their families but can be wary of strangers. They’re also famously chatty. Jack Russell Terriers are a vocal breed who bark a lot, an excitable dog famous for sharing their opinion about anything, from an approaching postman to reminding you that it’s dinner time.
Home life works best when the humans stay one step ahead of that terrier brain. The breed is naturally assertive and may not tolerate young children or other animals in the home, and they especially can be aggressive toward other dogs. That drive isn’t really about temper, though, it’s hardwired hunting instinct. Jack Russells have a strong prey drive due to their hunting background and are not ideal companions for smaller pets like hamsters, guinea pigs, or rabbits, and may relentlessly chase cats.
Give one of these dogs a job, or at least a very tired body and mind, and you get a wonderful companion. Jack Russell Terriers require at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily, including walks, playtime, and mental challenges, and without enough activity, they can become bored and develop destructive behaviors. Early, consistent socialization also goes a long way toward smoothing out the rough edges around new people and other animals.
