Black Spiny-Tailed Iguana

Breed Description

Fast, alert, and built for speed rather than size alone, the Black Spiny-Tailed Iguana is one of the quickest lizards in the world, capable of short bursts that have made it into record books. It’s a robust, dark-colored iguana relative with a distinctive ringed, spiny tail, and a noticeably more high-strung temperament than the classic Green Iguana.

Breed History

Black Spiny-Tailed Iguanas are native to Central America, particularly Mexico and Guatemala, where they favor rocky, arid terrain that suits their speed and climbing ability. They’ve also established sizable introduced populations in parts of Florida. In the pet trade, they’ve long been kept by experienced reptile enthusiasts drawn to their striking looks.

Behavioral Characteristics

Spiny-Tailed Iguanas are alert, fast-moving, and considerably more skittish and defensive than most other pet iguanas, especially if not handled consistently from a young age. They’re not typically considered a beginner’s lizard — their speed, sharp claws, and readiness to bolt (or bite) when startled call for an experienced keeper.

Fun Facts

  • “Its "spiny" tail, ringed with whorls of pointed scales, is used as an effective defensive weapon when the iguana feels cornered.”
  • “Introduced populations now thrive in parts of South Florida, far from their native Central American range.”
