Big, powerful, and surprisingly mellow once it settles in, the Boa Constrictor is one of the most iconic snakes in the world. It’s a heavy-bodied, non-venomous snake that kills prey by squeezing rather than venom, though as a pet, a well-socialized Boa is generally calm and predictable to handle.
Boa Constrictors range across a huge swath of Central and South America, from Mexico down through Argentina, and are found in habitats from rainforest to semi-desert. They’ve been popular in the exotic pet trade for decades, and selective breeding has produced numerous color varieties, from the classic reddish-tailed “Red-Tail Boa” to striking albino morphs.
Adult Boa Constrictors are typically calm and slow-moving, but their size demands real respect and experience — this is not a beginner’s first snake the way a Corn Snake or Ball Python is. They can grow quite large, and handling one safely, especially solo, generally requires more than one adult once the snake reaches full size.
