Don’t let the small size fool you β the Budgerigar, better known simply as the “budgie” or parakeet, is the most popular pet bird in the world for good reason. These little Australian natives pack in personality, charm, and (with a bit of patience) surprisingly clear talking ability, all in a body that weighs about as much as a few paperclips. Their cheerful chirping and constant curiosity make them one of the easiest, most rewarding birds for first-time owners.
Budgerigars are native to the grasslands of inland Australia, where they still travel in massive wild flocks searching for seeds and water. European naturalists brought them to Britain in the 1840s, and selective breeding for size, color, and temperament quickly turned the wild green budgie into the rainbow of colors seen in pet stores today. They’ve been one of the most popular companion birds in the US for decades.
Budgies are social, playful, and genuinely curious birds that do best with daily interaction β or with a companion budgie if their owner can’t spend a lot of time with them. Many budgies learn to mimic words and sounds with real clarity, some building surprisingly large vocabularies. They’re also known for their constant soft chatter, a near-continuous background commentary most owners find charming rather than annoying.
