California Kingsnake

Breed Description

Bold, glossy, and famously unbothered by handling, the California Kingsnake is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly snakes in the American pet trade. It’s best known for its striking banded pattern — usually black or dark brown with crisp white or cream bands.

Breed History

California Kingsnakes are native to California and neighboring parts of the western United States and Mexico, where they thrive in habitats from deserts to grasslands. “Kingsnake” refers to their well-earned reputation as snake-eaters — in the wild, they regularly prey on other snakes, including venomous rattlesnakes, to which they have a strong natural immunity.

Behavioral Characteristics

California Kingsnakes are alert, curious, and generally very calm with regular handling, making them a favorite among both first-time and experienced keepers. They’re strong eaters and hardy in captivity. One quirk to know: because of their snake-eating instincts, kingsnakes should always be housed alone — even with another kingsnake, cohabitation can end badly.

  • “Their name reflects their place at the top of the local snake food chain, not any special status among pet snakes.”
