The Miniature Australian Shepherd, officially known by the AKC as the Miniature American Shepherd, is a small herding dog with a huge personality packed into a compact body. Standing between 13 and 18 inches tall, this breed keeps all the brains, drive, and versatility of the standard Australian Shepherd but in a size that fits nicely into apartments, RVs, and horse trailers alike. Their eye-catching coats come in black, blue merle, red, and red merle, often paired with striking blue, amber, or even two different-colored eyes.
This is a dog built for a job. The breed standard describes it plainly: this is a dog with strong herding and guardian instincts, one that is easily trained and performs tasks with great enthusiasm and style. Whether that job is herding sheep on a ranch or chasing a frisbee in the backyard, a Mini Aussie throws its whole heart into it.
Despite the small stature, do not expect a lapdog that is content to nap all day. These dogs need both physical exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and well-behaved, making them best suited to active households that can keep up with their busy minds.
The story of the Mini Aussie starts in California in the 1960s, when breeders began working with small dogs that were thought to be Australian Shepherds, aiming to keep their compact size while preserving their sharp minds and lively character. One key figure was Doris Cordova, a Quarter Horse breeder from Norco, California, who bought a 13-inch-tall puppy named Spike and used him to establish a line of small Australian Shepherds standing between 11 and 15 inches. By the mid-1970s, the breed had settled into its now-familiar size and began breeding true.
Cordova and fellow breeder Charles Lasater focused on creating an Aussie small enough to travel easily to stock shows and live comfortably in the house, all while keeping the heart and drive to work livestock. The dogs were first registered with the National Stock Dog Registry in 1980 under the name Miniature Australian Shepherd, and interest in them grew steadily through the following decade. A dedicated breed club, MASCUSA, was founded in 1990 and formally incorporated in 1993 to promote and standardize these pint-sized herders.
The path to full recognition took decades of negotiation between clubs and breeders. The American Kennel Club finally welcomed the breed into its Foundation Stock Service in May 2011, and full AKC recognition came on July 1, 2015, under the official name Miniature American Shepherd. Many owners and breeders still fondly call them Mini Aussies, and the two names are used interchangeably to this day.
Mini Aussies are famous for having a big-dog personality stuffed into a small-dog body. They are bright, energetic, and always eager to please, which makes them quick learners in obedience, agility, and other dog sports. They thrive on daily exercise, mental challenges, and plenty of quality time with their favorite humans.
With family, they tend to be warm and devoted, often forming a strong bond with one or two people in particular. Around strangers, though, they are naturally reserved, which is part of their working heritage as watchful little guardians, though the breed standard is clear that this reserve should never tip into shyness.
That herding instinct runs deep, so it is common for a Mini Aussie to try to herd children, other pets, or even joggers and bicycles if not given an outlet for the behavior. Early socialization and training go a long way toward channeling that energy into games and structured activities instead. Given enough exercise and a job to do, they settle into wonderfully loyal, good-natured companions who are just as happy curled up for a cuddle after a long walk.
